This practical course is ideal for clerks who are ready to build on their core knowledge and strengthen their confidence in more complex areas of council work. It focuses on real-world situations and good governance, helping you support your council effectively and professionally.

You’ll cover:

  • Risk assessments — understanding your council’s responsibilities and how to manage risk proportionately

  • Working relationships — building effective partnerships with other councils, authorities, and community bodies

  • Grants, donations & Section 137 — making lawful, transparent funding decisions that benefit your community

  • Annual meetings — preparing for and running statutory meetings smoothly and compliantly

By the end of the session, you’ll feel more assured handling governance challenges, better equipped to advise members, and confident supporting strong, well-run councils.

Ideal for clerks and other officers with some experience in post or those looking for a refresher on governance best practice.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided so please let us know of any dietary requirements when booking.
